What I Have Learned In Six Words:
Not As Different As We Think
Course Reflection
Coming into this course, I had simply thought of genres as history, fiction, nonfiction, etc. I had no idea that the idea of genres had expanded beyond that. It was not until I began to read works by John Swales, Anis Bawarshi, Mary Jo Reiff, and Amy Devitt that I began to understand just how broad genres are and the fact that they affect us all. I would have to say that the assignment that I learned the most from is the Line of Inquiry paper. I feel that this paper allowed me to really analyze the nursing field in a way I had not done before. I feel that the point of this final project was to dive even deeper. I feel that I accomplished this because I identified a gap, or a topic that was missing from my research, and researched it more until I found out what I needed to.
This class has also taught me more about the professional setting of nurses. I also learned of the communication style of those within the health care industry. Before writing these papers, I was unsure of the citations used within the medical field. I later found out that it is simply MLA. I feel that when I continue to higher education fields in the health industry, I will be able to more effectively communicate not only in written word but also in the spoken communication.
Something that I have personally gained, and feel most proud about is my confidence in my writing. I have always been nervous about my writing, and I feel I have emerged a stronger writer because of this class. Professor Martinez has taught me that I do not simply have to follow the stereotypical introduction, body, conclusion paper format. It not not about you fitting the paper but better the paper fitting you and being able for your personality to shine through the writing. With all of this being said, I feel that I personally met the objective: To build confidence in writing expertise and rhetorical knowledge.
